African Wild Dog - Lycaon pictus
Lycaon pictus is a large canid found only in Africa, especially in savannas and lightly wooded areas. It is variously called the African wild dog, African hunting dog, Cape hunting dog, painted dog, painted wolf, painted hunting dog, spotted dog, or ornate wolf. he scientific name "Lycaon pictus" is derived from the Greek for "wolf" and the Latin for "painted". It is the only canid species to lack dewclaws on the forelimbs. This is the largest African canid and, behind only the gray wolf, is the world's second largest extant wild canid. Adults typically weigh 18–36 kilograms (40–79 lb). A tall, lean animal, it stands about 75 cm (30 in) at the shoulder, with a head and body length of 75–141 cm (30–56 in) plus a tail of 30 to 45 cm (12 to 18 in). Animals in southern Africa are generally larger than those in eastern or western Africa. There is little sexual dimorphism, though judging by skeletal dimensions, males are usually 3-7% larger. The African wild dog's main prey varies among populations but always centers around medium-to-large sized ungulates, such as the impala, Thomson's Gazelle, Springbok, kudu, reedbuck, and wildebeest calves. The most frequent single prey species depends upon season and local availability. For example, in the Serengeti in the 1970s wildebeest (mostly calves) were the most frequently taken species (57%) from January to June, but Thompsons gazelle were the most frequently taken (79%) during the rest of the year.

Human - Homo sapiens
Humans (known taxonomically as Homo sapiens, Latin for "wise man" or "knowing man") are the only living species in the Homo genus. Anatomically modern humans originated in Africa about 200,000 years ago, reaching full behavioral modernity around 50,000 years ago. Humans have a highly developed brain and are capable of abstract reasoning, language, introspection, and problem solving. This mental capability, combined with an erect body carriage that frees the hands for manipulating objects, has allowed humans to make far greater use of tools than any other living species on Earth. Human body types vary substantially. Although body size is largely determined by genes, it is also significantly influenced by environmental factors such as diet and exercise. The average height of an adult human is about 1.5 to 1.8 m (5 to 6 feet) tall, although this varies significantly from place to place and depending on ethnic origin. The average mass of an adult human is 54–64 kg (120–140 lbs) for females and 76–83 kg (168–183 lbs) for males. Weight can also vary greatly (e.g. obesity). Unlike most other primates, humans are capable of fully bipedal locomotion, thus leaving their arms available for manipulating objects using their hands, aided especially by opposable thumbs.

AWD. Too much stamina. Spin and spin and spin you til you collapse, and you're getting eaten alive after that.

P.S. Title says average human. None of that, "what if he's a heavyweight UFC fighter?"

I'm actually not really sure about this match-up now.

Depends on what you consider as a weapon. If you're talking about sticks or stones, it shouldn't be a problem, IMO (in the OP, using tools is even listed as an "ability" of the human). However, fire weapons are unfair.

A male human can be much larger than an African Wild Dog, as adults humans usually weigh 76-83 kg while African Wild Dogs weigh 18-36 kg. If the human was determined, but an average human, he can have a slight edge.

All this being said, I favour the African Wild Dog. Much faster, much more agile and much deadlier weaponry. That man wouldn't want to get torn apart by this:

I don't think it would be easy, but the dog would win in the end.

BTW, nice Robert Downey Jr picture
The average human is much larger than a german shepherd too. What's your point?

AWDs are second to only Wolves in size, among canides. And consider that they're in the wild, and hunting for their food. They're not living with humans and getting fed all day.

The average American would crap himself while the average Japanese would scream BONZAI!(ok no) And get disembowled, considering that I say dog win against average human.

If human can use stones and sticks then he or she at least can deter AWD successfully. Cold weapons such as knives or axes would give even more advantage.

If an average german shepherd don't have any trouble beating the average human, than this will be easy for the AWD.
Of course, the man still might win, specially on a terrain with things that can be weapons (IE, the right kind of rocks, sharp branches, etc). But on open ground, with no plan, no weapon, I think it's safe to give the canid 7/10.

I applaud the new pic for the human the old pseudo-kanye west pic was good too though.

African wild dog versus average human. I'm assuming half of the time this would include an average female human as well as the common coach potato comfortable man in the mix. If the man doesn't get a briefing in regards to wild dogs plus he doesn't start out with a spear or a knife I'd say he'd eventually get wittled down with bites and bleed out.

Maybe 7/10 for the wild dog, although I haven't voted yet.

Man, weapon or no weapon. The "average" human is going to kick it into next week.

If the man has a weapon it becomes animal cruelty, because he was going to win anyway and that's just overkill.

I know the picture of the skull looks a bit scary - but it's "only" 20 cm long.

I am going to be really unpopular saying this, but there exists no Canid - naturally occuring or bred - that can beat a human. Yeah you'll see in the news a Pitbull mauling a man, a German Shepherd knocking down and subduing a criminal etc, Wolves killing people and so on. But if they're put in an environment specifically to see "who would win" then the Human wins, 99/100.

AWD is a canid a lightly built one but still an adverse foe. But, but (I know I am gonna get a lot of hate for this) unlike most canids AWDS cant function alone they are highly social animals and one by itself cant do much it isn't programed how to. Its what makes the AWD a unique canid a wolf or a fox can still function alone hunt fight etc but and AWD simply cant and dosen't know how to. So for this match no one would win.

Ionno man. It's still a wild animal with a really mean bite, and WILL rip you apart if you try and touch it.

Just sayin.

You know the saying. Nothing's more dangerous than a cornered/wounded animal.

As I've said in a different thread, these fights are best discussed under the assumption that the human is fighting to save the lives of his family and friends.

Under those circumstances, still confident that you would lose? One punt in the face of the dog could kill or at least stun it. If the dog is biting you, it is within reach of your clutches and you can choke it to death. You may be able to run circles around a large crocodile, on land, but you would be scared of approaching it (assuming you could hurt it which you can't) because it could kill you really quick if it catches you.
