Great Topic, leopards IMO are the most underrated animal when it coms to big cat fan boys.![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() September 1st saw a new chapter in Keledi's life dawn: that of solo hunter and independent adult. Guests came across her on a morning drive and she had just killed a full-grown male red lechwe. Still out of breath and standing over her kill, there were drag marks indicating the area where the kill took place. Reconstructing the events, it seems that she grabbed hold of the lechwe, and owing the antelope's size relative to the leopard, had dragged it into the water before she managed to kill it. After some minutes of trying to regain her energy she started to drag it out of the water and towards the sanctuary of some nearby bush. She struggled though, as her energy was tapped and because of the size of the lechwe so, after dragging it few metres but still a distance from the bush, she started to eat. This was her first observed large prey animal, and as guests left her they all wondered if it would still be hers by the next day, as the size of the lechwe would make it tough to conceal her prey from other predators. |

Nice finds marc. Here’s the original video for the first one you posted (without the silly commentary added on). This was apparently a subadult female leopard attacking the buffalo. The leopard definitely looked inexperienced so not too surprised to learn it was a subadult. Nonetheless a very bold move by this cat, especially considering it was a female which even as adults wouldn't tackle such big prey. Calves and subadult buffalo are actually taken fairly frequently by leopards in Yala NP. Though, I think it's only the adult male leopards who are able to take the subadult buffalo. Sri Lankan water buffalo are a lot smaller than those on the mainland but still impressive prey for a predator the size of a leopard. BTW this was captured by the same guy who recorded the footage of the old male leopard killing the big boar in Yala. There was also some very cool footage shown in the BBC documentary "Leopard Hunters" where a female leopard in Yala attacked a buffalo calf and refused to let go even as she was attacked by the rest of the herd. Below is a similar account from Mala Mala where the Bicycle Crossing male leopard attacked a Cape buffalo calf and held on even as the massive adults approached. ![]()
