![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Styx pride maul young male leopard (7 foto's) A territorial dispute between two up-an-coming young male leopards turned into a horrifying event for one of them as their growls and intimidation calls to one another attracted a pride of lions close by, the Styx pride. Obviously so fixated on each other they hadn't noticed the lions approaching and for Wabayiza, the young male leopard, it was too late and before he managed to climb a nearby Marula tree the lions got hold of him. Typical of a lion mauling, they attacked his rear end and severely injured one of his hind legs. We arrived on the scene as the pride started circling the leopard for the second time, he tried his best to climb the tree but the strength in his back legs had been ripped away and he was unable to lift himself off the ground. They caught him again and despite a few hefty blows in a brave retaliation, the young male leopard was no match for six lions. After the second mauling the lions left, the leopard lay there, still alive and although he tried, he couldn't stand up. We left the scene with our hands shaking and feeling as if we were part of something horrific yet extremely unique. This fight for survival happens every day, the death of one animal leads to the flourish of another and it is out of our control. We were fortunate to be able to witness, first hand, the struggle that takes place on a daily basis and it is important to realise that we live in a place where human's don't make the rules - we are only here to observe and acknowledge how life once was for us - a constant struggle for survival... It never fully states he died, but merely could not stand, unsure if he won't be able to stand or if he was merely hurt to the point of exhaustion. We can only hope he survived. |

I doubt he survives...leopards can sustain injury better than cheetahs-but from the way this account is read, look like he won't make it

Nature is cruel... But that's nature ! Humans are worst. We can only comment on what we see. |

I think large males leopard and big hyenas give different problems in killing for lions. Anyway in both cases lions if possible prefer kill them in pack, although can happen that lone lion or lioness kill single hyena, or single leopard. Anyway when cornered leopard is a madness of power Edited by Kurtz, Apr 17 2014, 10:53 PM.
