That is an adult lioness.

Lions aren't that tall at the shoulder.

Edit - I decided to read it, I won't be an ass despite my general attitude. But ignoring my blatant passive aggressive post (I apologize) I have a real question.

What do you make of the lioness getting severely injured before The dogs stopped their assault and she got away? By your thinking it's easy to assume she was getting her ass beaten and only got away because she finally managed to kill a sub adult and the dogs backed off.
I don't see any severe injury...and-she is carrying a dead
AWD in her jaws. With her jaws occupied, she would not
be seen as big as a threat, yet there aren't any other dogs
in the area...

I am not surprised by the outcome in the slightest, b/c
I understand & have always understood that self preservation
is fundamental to animal psychology.

Poster's assume pack hunters will initiate kamikaze attacks
simply b/c of superior numbers....yeah, maybe among ants, wasp
& bee's-but not higher organisms...

So you were not surprised that a pack of lion averse canids injured a lioness? If so that makes no sense in regards to your earlier statement.

African wild dogs display a high degree of self preservation where they put the lives of their packs over the individual. There are plenty of instances where prides or single lions are able to push the canids around and kill them without retaliation of the pack.

A better understanding of these wild dogs would make it more evident that their behavior was not the norm and thus surprising.

Edit: On another note I do not see how the lioness was severely injured. She looks ok based of the visuals provided so maybe the observes saw something I could not.
I am not surprised by the dogs inability to kill
the lioness, nor am I surprised that an AWD was
killed, and that the others did not press the issue further.
If they were dominating the lioness, she would not have
been able to kill the pup, as she would have been too
overwhelmed to retaliate?

What exactly is a 'lion averse canid'? What canids don't avoid
lions? Jackals perhaps?

I see AWD taking care of other members-during hunts & against
hyenas-but I see them cede to lions quite often. I am still more
surprised that the other lions did not intervene on behalf
of there pride mate;I found that to be exceptionally strange.

Also, I am surprised that the AWDs engaged an adult
lioness, but am not surprised with the outcome.

I hope I have made myself clear.

Aren't wild dogs always together though? I wouldn't be surprised if a leopard fended off an attack from their pack.
I know it's weird, but we know nothing about the three animals. And I agree, a leopard wouldn't even dare to attack a pack of at least six wild dogs.

looks to be 9 AWD

^ Great Video! We have all seen AWD's in small numbers tree Leopards, yet sometimes Leopards intimidate AWD's in large numbers simply through confident behaviour:

the difference here in my opinio is that a big tom would manage to escape

The difference in my opinion is that they wouldnt seriously mess with an adult male leopard.
