Maybe it's because I live in a rural community in Canada but I also live in an area with large predators.
Wolves have hung out in my back yard, cougars have stood on my porch bears have sauntered across my lawn, but I almost never even hear stories of people loosing dogs to these animals around where I live

I would say that's because of the high concentration of stray dogs in India. They are a huge component of leopard diets whereas wolves and Cougars would have to hunt relatively secure family pets.

Sounds plausible to me but wolf predation of dogs seems almost common in some places in Europe but comparatively almost non existent where I live.
