The author erronneously identifies it as a fox. I don't know about you, but it doesn't look anything like a Sri Lankan golden jackal. Could it be a grey wolf???

Very interesting. I think it is most likely a young jackal or a jackal dog hybrid. Do you have the original link or more information? |

Unfortunately not.... https://www.flickr.com/photos/lakpura/15735483747/in/photolist-q7YVHG-pqCg8D-qnjw6Q-q5Y7E2-qncKmR-q52zGQ-qk2ahz-qiujBm-qh48Xp-qgKM65-pYut6V-qeFhVB-qczjh3-pXiwXJ-qeFmPZ-pXpPCV-phS5BE-qeRA5v-qcaySU-pW1rt6-pVTipA-pUhL5K-pUb3k5-peYdLR-pePTit-q7TSAL-pRXUAd-pQ23rt-p7kEy8-pHNK9y-pZLCKS-pXcUUC-pEdR6B-pBKiUs-pBDrcA-ptfLYb-psZxNf-pCYRsM-ph3acb-pe9UGK-pvpGdX-pvpHBZ-pdUVks-pdVE1e-pdVEDZ-pvpGBx-pZ8AAe-pXcUHf-pFhUQC-pTDAWK The idea that it's a jackal-dog is interesting though... |

It is my personal opinion that this creature is a 2or 3 way hybrid. The resemblance to the feral dogs and wolves of the area is striking. In fact all 3 can breed and produce fertile offspring so it is possible. Here are some photos for comparison. Indian wolf ![]() ![]() Feral dogs ![]() Sri Lankan Jackal ![]() ![]() ![]() Mystery canid ![]() It's eyes bear resemblance to the wolf, as well as their color. The black tipped tail suggests wolf influence as well. The mystery canid has the forehead wrinkles of the Indian wolf, as well as the fur pattern of a Jackal. It's ears seem to be a combination of the wolf and Jackal. And it's legs are straight up Jackal. The color however is unusual. Perhaps it came from domestic dog influence a few generations back. |

After looking at it closer, I am almost certain it is a dog-jackal hybrid. As Canis lupus (read grey wolf) does not occur on Sri Lanka, I don't think it is a three way hybrid. Here is another dog from Sri Lanka.

Yes but the wolf traits are pretty clear. Maybe a stray with wolf blood? It has some features similar to our old hound mix. |

The coloration can be explained by the variability of domestic dog pelage. |

What if I told you that dogs are not only extremely varied in appearance but also technically wolves. |
