Animals have evolved all kinds of unique characteristics to deal with their environments. What are some of the coolest? Here's my picks: -in general, epicgenetics -embryonic diapause -hyena and vulture stomach acids -blood squirting by horned lizard(s) -fulmar chicks oily vomit -eusociality The most amazing has to be the pistol shrimp: |

The females octopuses of the genus Tremoctopus use their long, cape-like skin membrane to intimidate potential predators. Like the tails of some lizards, this "cloak" easily tears away without harm to the animal.![]() ![]()

I also think it is cool phenomenon when co-evolved adaptations are useful in other ways. For example, crayfish from Texas have been introduced here in the Neds. In their original range they dig holes in response to drought, here they do it in response to winter. Might not be that amazing, but I think it is cool. The ants that create devil's gardens, are cool as well. As long as they do not make the whole world a devil garden, that would be immensely boring. Ophiocordyceps unilateralis, is pretty cool unless you are an ant: Mind control! More mind control! |
