I am writing a dinosaur book and i want to make it fairly realistic in terms of the dinosaurs. I do know a fair amount about them, but I just wanted to make sure a couple of scenes are realistic. If any paleontologists would help (or people who are dino nerds like me) that would be fantastic! The first scene i need advice on is a very short part. Basically a Carnotaurus sasteri (is that how you spell it?) has just swung his head into a woman and she gets flung into a shop/store and then the carnotaurus puts his foot on her legs and bites down on her torso (it gets a little gory here) and pulls her in half. I know the carno wont have a very strong bite or large jaws but i feel like it could do that. The other scene is not as action packed, but it is set from the perspective of a Utahraptor. He's a juvenile and i was wondering if I should use simple language or not. Another one is a bunch of humans trap a female t-rex and it is possible to escape after alot of exertion. Instead she decides to alternate between mating and distress calls to attract predators. Would a T-rex be intelligent enough to do that? If anyone decides to look at this, I appreciate any advice and critiscism. |

1. Dunno 2. An artsy way to do it is to use no words and just describe what the raptor is doing. Raptors can't talk after all 3. Probably not. |

Thanks for the advice on the raptor ![]() I wasn't going to make talk anyway it was more like a recap of recent events from the utahraptors perspective. |

Here's some advice: don't have the dinosaurs constantly roaring or vocalising. If you look at the way modern predators hunt, they're very silent. Unless you're talking about hyenas, the majority of predators are silent killers, unless you count the bleating and screaming of their victims. Also, I seriously doubt dinosaurs roared like lions. Try describing the sounds a big bird like a cassowary makes. |

That was something I was considering because the book is about survival and how dinosaurs are incredibly dangerous and seeing a t-rex stood over you and just...staring is alot more intense than it roaring all the time and making lots of noise. I do know that a large theropod can be heard for kilometres around when roaring. Even if a T-rex, for instance, was going to vocalise i would make it have a low, deep, bellowing noise. As opposed to RAWHR!!! And scaring off all prey in a thousand-mile radius. Its set in England, I will add. A t-rex roars, everything hears it. Especially since the UK is smaller than most states in the US Edited by J3st3r56, Feb 18 2015, 05:01 AM.

For the raptor segment you should avoid having the raptor narrate and monologue, it'd be more believable and atmospheric if you described what the raptor was doing from a third person perspective: "as he loped through the undergrowth the wind changed direction, bringing with it the familiar scent of carrion". Something like that. Bare in mind i'm no paleontologist, but as someone who studied English lit and is an avid reader I think that would be the best path to go down. |

No, I haven't actually I was making assumptions after learning about how large dinosaurs make low rumbles called infrasound, I think? That may only be for sauropods though. And i also took inspiration from crocodiles and things. Thanks for the sounds though! They actually really helped with deciding what noises each dinosaur could make. Like the short, raspy one could be a ceratosaurus or something of a similar size Ok, yeah! I'll do a couple of test paragraphs to see how it looks compared to others and I'll see how it goes

Try to have a sentence, or perhaps two describe an action. Take your time, try to not repeat words much in a short part of text. Good luck! |

I've thought about the cassowary sounds and what dinosaurs they relate to. 1. Dilophosaurus 2.pachycephalosaurus 3.utahraptor 4.carnotaurus 5.Stegosaurus or Triceratops 6.Has to be a sauropod like apatosaurus or titanosaurus This is still open to interpretation, so if anyone has other ideas then please share them. ![]() Thanks, Hatzegopteryx! You're welcome! Let your imagination flow. Writing can be hard sometimes, as the writer often does not feel the excitement the reader does. Just write what falls better into the scene, as if it were truly happening. Try to describe things in unique ways, and put yourself in the character's place to work out the best way to describe a reaction. Again, good luck. |

I always liked the sound of emu booming, I can't seem to find a video that has good audio of this behavior but it sounds kind of like a a tom-tom drum. this video captures it only slightly. |

That noise reminds of a stegosaurus or ankylosaurus or something to that effect. |

Writing a book is hard. I want to write a book as well. I want it to have meaning and it to be unique. I also want to use scientific jargon in creative ways, underlying messages and metaphores. Difficult. I'm thinking of mythology in a modern jacket. The idea I am toying with now is that our world has transcended into a second dark age. Because a lot of information was lost towards this dark age, it is all messed up. The people that live in this world are also superstitious. So it is not a fantasy world, but the people believe in fantasy. Good luck. |

That sounds like a really interesting book idea! I'm quite fascinated with mythology so, I'd really like that idea to come to fruition. Actually, I could gove you a hand with it as well! You're supporting me, I feel like I should return the favour. Edited by J3st3r56, Feb 18 2015, 10:37 PM.
