Rhino trapped in slush - Rescue operations on at Kaziranga National Park KAZIRANGA NATIONAL PARK, ASSAM: After getting stuck in a slush pit formed after the recent floods a female rhino has died at Assam's Kaziranga National Park. Officials at the park say she had been in severe pain for over 72 hours. According to local wildlife activists, the rhino got stuck in mud after she was involved in a fight with some male rhinos. ![]() The fight left her back paralysed and she was stuck at the spot getting more and more entrenched in the mud. Medical and rescue teams were rushed from Guwahati, but in spite of their best efforts, the rhino could not be rescued. The incident happened in the park's central range, in the interiors of the park where there are no motorable roads. Union Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar also visited the park over the weekend, promising greater help to the park to curb poaching incidents. Reports said 22 rhinos at Kaziranga have been poached this year. http://www.ndtv.com/india-news/after-72-hours-of-excruciating-pain-a-rhino-dies-at-kaziranga-660752 Rhino rescued from a mud-pit near KazirangaPosted on January 15th, 2009 ![]() Kaziranga (Assam): A sub-adult female rhino stuck in a mud-pit near Kaziranga National Park was rescued this morning by the Assam Forest Department, assisted by Wildlife Trust of India-International Fund for Animal Welfare (WTI-IFAW). The rhino had its hind legs trapped in thick mud in a pit on a stretch of farmland near Rajabari Tea Estate, about two kilometres west of Kaziranga National Park. Dr Prasanta Boro, WTI-IFAW veterinarian, was called in, when it became clear that it was impossible for the rhino to ‘pull free’ on its own. ![]() “There was a huge crowd gathered around the rhino, which must have unnerved it. There was no way it could have got out on its own. It was fatigued from repeated attempts at pulling herself out of the mud and could barely move when I reached there,” Dr Boro said. Civil Administration personnel intervened to help disperse the crowds of people, who thronged the site to get a closer glimpse of the helpless animal. Reportedly, a woman was injured as she got too close. After preliminary examination, Dr Boro administered injectibles comprising life-saving drugs and multi-vitamins. The Forest Department authorities including SN Buragohain, Director, Kaziranga NP and DD Gogoi, DFO, Eastern Assam Wildlife Division, meanwhile devised the plan to free the rhino by digging out the mud around the pit, to level it out. An earth-mover was then deployed to carefully excavate the mud around the trapped animal’s hind legs. About 30 minutes after this intervention, the rhino began to shuffle around. Soon, it freed itself from the pit, and walked slowly away towards the forest. http://www.wti.org.in/oldsite/archives/2009/01/15/rhino-rescued-from-a-mud-pit-near-kaziranga/ Rhino dies after being trapped in mud for three days An adult female rhino died today in Kaziranga National Park after being trapped in mud for three days, a forest official said. The female rhino was trapped in a mud pit on Saturday near Bordoloni forest camp in Kohora Range of the World Heritage Site and died around around 8.30 am, said KNP Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) S P Seal Sarma. All efforts were made to rescue the rhino, Sarma said adding the KNP forest veterinary wing, along with a team of doctors from the College of Veterinary Science, Guwahati, and veterinarians from the Centre for the Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation (CWRC) tried to safely bring out the one-horn rhino from the mud. The forest department does not have crane-like equipment for safely lifting heavy animals like rhinos and elephants trapped in mud or deep drains, he said. Earthmoving and construction equipment vehicles, as suggested by some quarters, were not used for lifting the animal as the equipment would cause serious injuries to it, he said. This is the third rhino killed since October last in similar circumstances, the DFO said. Meanwhile, another rhino was roaming about in a jute field in Gorebandha area of Nagaon district for the last five days, Forest Department sources said. The local people claimed that the Forest Department personnel did not make the necessary efforts for sending the rhino back to Kaziranga. According to official records, 22 rhinos were killed this year while 24 poachers were arrested and 20 others lost their lives in encounters with security forces. Since 2001, a total of 127 rhinos have been killed by poachers till now, as per the records. http://www.deccanherald.com/content/429760/archives.php Edited by Warsaw2014, Mar 31 2015, 06:52 PM.
