I had some toughts on tyrannosauridae taxonomy. I was exploring where do T.rex, Albertosaurus, Alioramus....etc... fit on various cladograms published by diffirent autors, when I noticed something: nearly none of the cladograms fetured a controversial taxon Nanotyrannus lancensis, which I found realy weird. Even thoe there are lots of people who think Nanotyrannus is probably not a valid genus, including myself (at least at this point), there is also relatively large amount of people, including tyrannosaurid experts, who think Nanotyrannus should stay valid. Yet, none of these people, except Currie (that was before most of the tyrannosaurids that I think are relevant in this discussion were discovered), published any paper (at least that I know of) wich deals with issue of taxonomic placement of Nanotyrannus lancensis. So I would like to have a little discussion here based on this question: Where would Nanotyrannus, if it´s indeed valid, fit into Tyrannosaurid familly. Would he be some kinf of advanced Tyrannosaurini who evolved to have a long, low snout, or maybe he is some kind of Albertosaurini, or Alioramnini, or maybe a relative of Appalachisaurus and Dryptosaurus that crossed into western North America when Western Interior Seaway sea level fell down, or maybe something else..... What do you think ? Keep in mind, I do not want to make this into Nano vs. T.rex debate, this disscusion is only relevant if Nano is valid,. He may or may not be, the evidence is not conclusive, but here I want you to not be arrogant and accept that he may indeed be a valid taxon. I personaly don´t think he is, but I think that he has a chance to be. So, If Nanotyrannus turns out to be valid, what would be it´s taxonomic possition ? DISCUSS !!!

A sister to Tyrannosaurus, as it would be a developementally stunted version of it.

If it somehow turns out to NOT be a juvenile tyrannosaurus, I see it being closest to appalachiasaurus.

Considering how so many have thought Nanotyrannus to be a juvenile of Tyrannosaurus, I would assume that it is closely related. Though the holotype skull was originally classified as Gorgosaurus, so it might be an albertosaurine. Alternatively, it might be more closely related to the superficially similar Alioramus and Qianzhousaurus.
