From what I can gather from a really, really quick google image search and my memories of nature docs; it would seem that carrying cubs happens when they are either A) to small to move on they're own yet or B) in danger. While I suppose that a male lion may help in situation A, in situation B his job is to meet the danger to his cubs, while the females get themselves and the cubs to safety. He can't fight of rival males if he's got one of his kids in his mouth. I'm unaware of the degree of paternal care in other species of cats, but lions are probably your best bet searching for this behavior. |
