This is a thread for species that don't usually receive much attention. Here are the criteria for posting: - The species must be an animal (no plants, fungi, or any other non-animals). - The species can be either living or extinct. - "Obscure" here is defined as "not well-known by the general populace". - If the species already has an official profile on Carnivora, link to it. - If not, create one and link it to this thread. - Scientific references for the species must be included. No invertebrates because the number of obscure species would be too damn high! |

Remember to include scientific references on these species. Btw, Eusmilus is a synonym of Hoplophoneus: https://peerj.com/articles/1658/ |

I think the criteria here is too exclusive for a thread on "obscure animals" -- i've made profiles on obscure species here, references included.

I guess this excludes acid spewing snails that utilize a drill as their primary weapon, your loss. |

I'd say just remove "has to be a vertebrate" and "can't have a profile" |

Naticidae, better known moon snails voracious predators. One species, Conuber sordidum, is known to hunt solider crabs larger than its self. This is an intertidal species who thrives in sandy substrate, think sarlac from Star Wars. They expand their mouths, engulf their prey and bore into shells and exoskeleton using a combination of acid excretions and a specialized drill like radula. Devours a hermit crab, shell and all. Eating a small solider crab. Edited by Ceph, Apr 6 2017, 01:12 PM.

Here's one of my favorites: Trucidocynodon riograndensis There's a link to an article there in the profile. It talks about the potential attempt for cursoriality and being potentially digitigrade. This is the link: https://www.app.pan.pl/archive/published/app61/app001712015.pdf |

How do you get permission to create animal profiles? I want to start one for the Patagonian platypus, Monotrematum sudamericanum. |

You don't need permission last I checked. Just go to Forum Home, then New Animal Profiles, and create to your heart's content. |
