striped hyenas are underrated
very much so that anything can beat it
the striped hyena can just be as powerful as spotted
it hunts female roe deer some times
and can fight 4 wolves in the wild defending a kill

I agree it's probably formidable, but female roe deer? Lone Whippet crosses weighing 25 lbs were frequently killing male roe deer before the UK ban on hunting with dogs. Killing any cervid short of a moose is not an astonishing accomplishment for a carnivoran in the 60lbs+ range, killing a female roe deer is no great accomplishment for a 20 lbs dog. Deer are surprisingly poor at fighting predators or surviving their attacks. They are much better at completely avoiding and evading the attacks. Catching one is much more impressive than killing one.

A family's beloved three-year-old boerboel was allegedly attacked and fed by a hyena this weekend. The incident occurred at a farm in Holfontein near Brandvlei.

According to Yolandi Killian, 42, and Francois Olivier, 42, their boerboel Butch, Friday, March 3, was last seen.

Martinez Olivier, 12, Francois's daughter, came to Horse on Sunday morning (5 March) on Butch's highly mutilated remains, which left about 150 meters from the house. His abdomen was wiped away.

Killian told them they had barks and chased their dogs for a few nights.

On Saturday, March 4, it was strange to Butch that they did not come home. The next morning they started looking for him.

A shocked Martinez apparently got the trace of Hierna's butcher's remains. In addition to the traces, Olivier also found out of the hyena's nails. There were also apparently small jaws alongside the big ones. "I do not think a hyena has ever attacked an animal in this area," Olivier said.

When the Herald had talked to Olivier this morning (8 March), he told that another farmer living a mile from his farm had also got little traces.

"The farmers in the area are now afraid that their sheep, but also their dogs, can become the next victims. The tracks look like those of a brown hyena. "

Striped and browns hyenas are tough but relatively small. Spotted hyenas are another thing however. Even the strongest dog breeds would be in in trouble against a matriarch in its prime IMHO. That doesn't mean that a dog cannot kill a spotted female but generally I don't see their chances very good.
