Hello ImperialDino. It is generally accepted that cougars follow the Bergmann's rule and tend to be bigger in areas further from the equator both towards the north and south of their range (Patagonia refers to the south end of South America). The data generally appears to support this idea from what I have seen. Weights recorded for Patagonian cougars seem to match those of Canadian or northern US cougars. The heaviest scientifically recorded North American cougars are around 80kg out of hundreds of adult males which is matched by at least 2 captured males from Patagonia despite a smaller sample size. Skull data, although limited for these cougars, also suggests large size. |

Poor thing - born with a strange deformity and then shot by a hunter. Wildlife biologists ponder strange mountain lion Staff Writer POSTED: 02:58 PM MST Jan 07, 2016 Deformed Mountain Lion POCATELLO, Idaho - Idaho Fish and Game biologists would like to know more about a yearling mountain lion that was legally harvested by a hunter southwest of Preston December 30. When the hunter took the animal through a Fish and Game check station, the inspector noticed a strange deformity on the animal's head. It appeared to be a set of teeth and even some whiskers. Regional Conservation Educator Jennifer Jackson said the lion was shot in Hunting Unit 73 near Weston. She said nobody in the Pocatello regional office had ever seen anything like it before. Biologists speculate it could be either the remnants of a conjoined twin or a terratoma (monstruous) tumor. Biologists are trying to contact the hunter, who lives outside the area, to do some additional research. http://www.localnews8.com/news/wildlife-biologists-ponder-strange-mountain-lion/37318208 |

![]() Notoriously elusive, cougars vary their range in response to their prey, mostly elk and deer. In winter they favor the shallow snow in the northern reaches of Yellowstone. This cougar was caught on the prowl by a camera trap set behind an elk rack on a cliff. http://www.nationalgeographic.com/magazine/2016/05/yellowstone-national-parks-wildlife-restoration/ |
