Special forces soldiers train a lot in hand to hand combat because we have to kill without being heard. The less you use a gun in the special forces, the better. My point however was that these conditions toughen you up beyond belief. When I was recruited, I went in with 15 years of martial arts experience, and expected to just humble everyone. I was wrong. I could not understand why so many years of training, were just easily surpassed by men who had only trained in warfare. It took 6 months to reach their level. When I did, I thought back and said "And you thought you were tough then..." Another reason why I mentioned Special Forces is because we train in hand to hand combat with animals, whereas fighters don't.

Yes, it's totally possible. Chimps average something like 120 lbs for males. Although this would be difficult to perform in a harsh setting, as an aggressive chimp would be jumping or charging all over. |

If we're referring to human elite, a man has a better chance fighting off a military dog than a mastiff. Overall, GSD-types are well rounded with just enough power, speed, agility, endurance and bite force. Besides, majority of individuals wouldn't even attempt to fight off a police dog. |

I never said that a military dog is harder to fight off than other types of dogs. I just said that they can put trained commandos through hell. |

Out of curiosity what type of armament did you carry during combat ops, as far as close quarters combat goes. Any specific style of knife, or similar weapons? I know that state side the most common knife for soldiers is the Ka-Bar, though a lot of soldiers have started to carry trench hawks again as well. As for hand to hand combat with a dog, I agree with you that the last thing any unarmed man would want to fight in the field is a trained attack dog. When I think of your typical encounters with aggressive canines, my mind tends to focus on smaller wild dogs that we have living in my own neck of the woods like coyotes and coy dogs. While I still think that a well trained unarmed man would be able to handle a dog of that size with any range of injuries, I'm fairly certain that it would take a far outside the norm individual to do the same with a breed like the malinois. |

Well, we used the the M7 bayonet (introduced in the 60's for the M16 rifle). We were also allowed to carry another knife of choice. For training, I would carry a lock-blade knife. If I were to go on a real opperation, I had large survival knives (I have not seen combat though). The Ka-Bar is mainly used by US Marines. We did not use it. We could purchase it if we wanted though. |

People have the capacity to be formidable animals. Most of us aren't though because we remove ourselves from natural conditioning. The inabiity to fend off similar sized animals is as much psyhological as physical. In parts of the world where men for generations have risked death by fang and claw almost daily, you will find many humans that have survived or even killed powerful animals with their bare hands. They often wear scars from these encounters as a testimony to humans ability to not only survive but thrive in natures garden. |

Kenyan Man Dies From Hyena Attack Moments After Killing Lion With His Bare Hands November 20, 2007 7:35 a.m. EST Ishita Sukhadwala - AHN News Writer Nairobi, Kenya (AHN) - A Kenyan man killed a lion with his bare hands in Samburu, about 260 kilometers northeast of the capital Nairobi, only to be attacked by a pack of hyenas a few moments later, the country's media reported Tuesday. He succumbed to his injuries and died in hospital Monday. Moses Lekalau, 35,a herdsman, was walking from a neighboring village in Maralal with his livestock when a lion pounced upon him. He managed to fend off the animal and used his bare hands and a spear to kill him following half hour duel. Moments later a pack of hyenas emerged from a nearby bush and attacked Lekalu, biting off his hands and toes. He was taken to Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi where he died Monday as a result of excessive bleeding. Herman Wabomba, the spokesperson for the hospital said "It was a brave fight for his life on both occasions", reports News24. Lekalau came from a nomadic community in which it is a ritual for boys to kill lions as a sign of entering manhood. In Kenya wild animals attacking humans is quite common since people live close to game parks and animal migration areas. http://www.allheadlinenews.com/articles/7009215745 Posted 20th November 2007 by BigCatRescue Kenyan Man Dies From Hyena Attack Moments After Killing Lion With His Bare Hands November 20, 2007 7:35 a.m. @Populator: I think training with a Malinois is different from trying to kill it with all your force. If an SASR or Shayetet 13 soldier would try to kill a Malinois, I think he would have good chances. And Malinois are different from most animals because of their attack drive. While watching videos of animal attacks against each other and humans I noticed how they appear kinda clumsy and ineffective. For example, bears often hug and scratch a human, mauling him for minutes. But, a bear could very well kill a human with a single wipe to the head or neck, or with a well placed bite. There also recently was a case in which a man in India was attacked by a leopard, the leopard removed his scalp but the man was able to defend himself and rout the animal. Also I don't think that, as often stated, animals have a better fighting psyche than a human. Quite the opposite; in the wild animals have to survive. They try to avoid being injured at all costs. Take tigers for example. A tiger is a very formidable animal, more than capable of killing a human. Nevertheless, most tiger attacks on humans are done from behind. Animals are very, very cautious. |

Well he did have a spear in his "bare hands"! "Moses Lekalau, 35,a herdsman, was walking from a neighboring village in Maralal with his livestock when a lion pounced upon him. He managed to fend off the animal and used his bare hands and a spear to kill him following half hour duel. " They also fought for half an hour! |
