HAMILTON, Mont. -- State wildlife officials say a crippled and starving mountain lion was shot after it killed a pit bull that was out for a walk with its owner in the Darby area over the weekend.

Fish, Wildlife and Parks Warden Lou Royce says the lion killed the 13-year-old, 50-pound dog last Saturday, after the dog ran down toward a creek to get a drink. Royce says the dog's owner heard a commotion and when she went to investigate, she saw the lion's tail.

Royce was in Missoula when he received a call reporting the attack, so he called some local houndsmen. The houndsmen treed the lion near where the attack occurred and an officer with the Ravalli County sheriff's department shot it.

Royce says the lion had a badly broken back leg, weighed about 60 or 70 pounds and was starving. He says the cat would have weighed about 120 pounds if it had been healthy.

While I have no doubt that a healthy adult cougar would have no trouble killing any pitbull, I think that in this incident the canine's advanced age was likely the biggest factor in its own death.

This is certainly a good instance of combat between the species. Essentially, one must decide what is worse to exhibit as a fight, starvation or age?

A very impressive effort from the Cougar, especially considering the broken leg. However there are a few things we need to take in to account. The Pitbull was probably a chubby and lovable pet, it was thirteen and may have had hearing or scent issues, and it was likely completely oblivious to the Cougar's presence. Another thing you must take in to account is the size of the Cougar, while it was only sixty lbs because of starvation and would have lost all of it's fat and muscle mass, it's frame was still that of a one hundred and twenty lb Cougar. (I'm trying to ignore FP in the hopes that he'll go back under his bridge.)

I love this account. 8 month old cougar cub kills 150 lb Great Pyrenees

http://www.9news.com/news/story.aspx?storyid=129758&catid=188

EAGLE COUNTY - Deputies shot and killed a mountain lion after it attacked a family dog at a home in Gypsum on Saturday.

A spokesperson for the Eagle County Sheriff's Office says deputies were called to a home on Sunset Lane around 2 a.m. on a report that a mountain lion had attacked a 150-pound Great Pyrenees.
Once deputies arrived on scene, they found the dog in the cougar's mouth.

The dog's owner, Tara Haymond, says she grabbed a shotgun and hit the cougar with it when she couldn't find ammunition, but then decided to call deputies.

The deputies shot and killed the mountain lion. Because the dog had difficultly breathing and was badly hurt, the deputies also shot the dog at Haymond's request.

The Division of Wildlife took the mountain lion to be tested for rabies. The cougar was estimated to be 8 months to a year old. Wildlife officials say the mountain lion looked very skinny and may have been sick, starving or both.

A mountain lion killed a 150-pound dog in the back yard of a Mount Vernon home. The attack on the 3-year-old pet Alaskan malamute occurred Sunday night when the dog's owners, Christian Christensen and his wife, were away. Christensen said that when they got home Monday night, the dog was missing and they found blood, tracks and signs of a scuffle in the snow. "She (the dog) had been dragged through the back yard," Christensen said. Wildlife authorities... 116 words, Rocky Mountain News (CO)

The dog could of been in perfect health, the only thing stated about the dog is its age and weight, the fact is the puma had only 3 working legs, was also carrying the dead weight of its fourth leg and was probably on deaths door just to its starvation and it still made light work of the oh so amazing best fighting dog in the world pittpoodle...

Next you will say the dog was already dead before the puma got to it...lol

13 years is very old for a dog. It was the only prey that puma could get to. If the pitbull was young and killed the puma people would say it was thin and injuried and meant nothing.

Perhaps only FelinePower would be delusional enough to use that as an excuse.

150 Great Pyrenese was killed by a cougar cub estimated to be 8 months old. Probably weighed 60 to 70 lbs. Less than half the weight of the dog.

The Alaskan Malamute weighed 150 lbs.

Some appeared to have claw marks and puncture wounds, indicating an attack by a small cougar.

The search for a reportedly wounded cougar continued Sunday in Seabeck.

Trained hounds were used once again to search an area near Hintzville, where last week a cougar is believed to have injured two pit bulls and a boxer in different incidents. One of the pit bulls had to be euthanized following the attack, its owner, Carrie Ramirez, said Saturday.

But just as they had Friday, the hounds failed to pick up a scent in the area, off Lost Highway, Sgt. Ted Jackson of the state Department of Fish and Wildlife said Sunday.

Jackson said residents in the area should always pay attention to where pets and children venture in such a rural environment. He encouraged anyone who spots the cougar to call the Washington State Patrol at (360) 405-6650.

But for now, "there's really nothing we can do," Jackson said.

The first attack came Tuesday, when the male pit bull was mortally wounded. On Friday, the cougar returned, Ramirez said, injuring a male boxer and a second pit bull, a female pregnant with the deceased male's babies.

Both incidents featured puncture wounds and claw marks, the signs of a cougar attack.

The cougar was reportedly wounded during the second attack Friday, when a man shot it in the hindquarters, Ramirez said.

The family was able to get the boxer and the pit bull to a veterinarian's hospital. The boxer's life was saved by the vet, Ramirez said, and the pit bull was treated as well.
