Shark v shark in ultimate ocean battle at South Australia’s Neptune Islands

December 7, 2015 10:02pm
CLARE PEDDIE SCIENCE REPORTER

WHEN a young great white took on a bigger shark in a fight for food off the South Australian coast, he bit off more than he could chew.

In a sensational picture taken from a diver’s cage, the youngster ends up in the jaws of the 5m before she spits him back out and continues with the feeding frenzy.

Port Lincoln photographer Jason Whittle, 43, captured the scene while cage diving in the Neptune Islands near the entrance of the Spencer Gulf.

“There where some big sharks around feeding periodically, as well as a few smaller ones,” he said.

“A smaller one came in to take the bait and without warning a bigger female charged in and opened up its mouth fully wide, revealing its sharp teeth, and caught the smaller shark in its mouth.

“But instead of biting down the big female forced the water out of its mouth and the little shark with it.”

Mr Whittle said it was “definitely a warning not to jump the line and respect the elder, queen of the territory”.

“With that much power she could have ended that smaller shark without any problems,” he said.

“But sharks don’t have hands to say ‘get out of the way’ so the next best thing is for them to open their jaws to show how big they are.”

Flinders University senior lecturer Dr Charlie Huveneers said biting was a “natural behaviour” in shark society.

“When there are several white sharks within one area, these kinds of interactions can occur,” he said.

“They try to set up some hierarchy between each other. You see dogs doing the same thing.”

The southern Shark Ecology Group research leader said white sharks were solitary animals that

“don’t usually spend much time in close proximity, unless they are at places like seal colonies or maybe whale carcasses”.

They also bite each other during mating.

“We see sharks with bite marks on different parts of their body quite frequently,” Dr Huveneers said.

“To see the events taking place you need to have somebody in the right place at the right time, but it does happen, we see plenty of sharks with bite marks.”

Mr Whittle managed to capture the frames despite issues with his underwater camera housing and rough conditions inside the shark cage.

“It felt like I had waited three or four hours to get a shot — but it was well worth the whole trip just for that one,” he said.

“Everyone on the boat could not believe what had just happened. No one had seen something like that before, let alone capture it.”

While sharks are known to occasionally eat their own kind — even their own siblings inside the uterus during pregnancy — it has rarely been caught on camera.
