is the size difference between a kodiak bear and a black bear really that large? It looks like less than a a quarter it´s weight. Male black bears can reach 400kg and 1,8m in lenght, a large kodiak reaches 750kg and 2,5m in lenght. |

Giving my estimate, i`d say it weighs something like 320 kg or so. Quite normal for a kodiak. The black bear is less than 300 lbs. |

I almost feel sorry for our ancestors who had to encounter this beast during the ice age. Just look at the size of that thing! |

No, according to wikipedia, it can reach 400kg, some captive individuals even more. But most comaprisons that I know aren´t at average, but at maximum size. but when the kodiak bear is only around 300kg, the black bear looks far too small, like less than 100kg. What does the arctodus weigh? Are there enough specimen to give an average size? |

If wikipedia says a black bear can reach 400 kgs, then it's woefully wrong. A black bear will rarely get close to 400 pounds. |

The average adult male black bear from Pennsylvania and New Jersey are around 450 lbs-larger than many male grizzlies. Like brown bears, their weight varies tremendously from region to region. I agree that 400 kg is very excessive for a truly wild bear. Perhaps one feeding heavily at garbage dumps, but not one eating only natural food sources. EDIT: Look here; male Pennsylvania black bears over 9 years old average at close to 500 lbs. Edited by Ursus arctos, Jun 7 2012, 04:58 AM.

^Ok. I live in Virginia and the ones in Shenandoah National Park are a bit smaller than that. Even if it's 450 pound average though, it's still nowhere near 400 kgs. |
