I agree-400 kg is much to much. IIRC, the black bear claimed to weigh that much regularly fed on garbage and was very obese. Black bears in many other regions are far smaller. Average weight of males in Spring, Summer, and Fall of black bears from Upper Columbia and Flathead in Southeastern British Columbia between 1980 and 2010 were 93.7, 103.1, and 112.5 kg. 400 pounds would be a large black bear. 400 kgs is impossible. |

This isn´t about the maximum size of a black bear, though 400kg certainly aren´t impossible, as bears vary a lot between sexes, regions and average and maximum sizes. But the black bear in the comparison still looks far too small compared to the kodiak bear, even with the weights given. Why not make a comparison of maximum sizes, they are easier to verify. |

To shed some light, here is some data on the body mass of the black bear (page 7): http://www.state.tn.us/twra/pdfs/bearbiology.pdf Another (page 8 and 9) http://www.bearbiology.com/fileadmin/tpl/Downloads/URSUS/Vol_7/Schroeder_Vol_7.pdf Weights of some huge black bears, page 4: http://www.vtfishandwildlife.com/books/Vermont_Black_Bear/_The%20Vt%20Black%20Bear_Section%201.pdf A black bear of 639 lbs: http://www.northernwisconsinoutfitters.com/pdfs/blackbear639.pdf |

With a 100 kgs of fat, then yes it would be possible but a healthy black bear will simply not weigh that much. You can't trust Wikipedia. I can change the text and claim that a black bear has a maximum weight of 50 kg... |

Thanks for the black bear data, boldchamp. Very insightful and confirms that while they can get very big 400 kgs is probably out of range. But they can get bigger than I had thought |

400 kg is possible, and has been recorded.....but then, humans have been recorded at 1400 lbs....but i wouldn`t use such a human for comparison, or one remotely close to that weight.

I like the bear pictures with the short faced bear. How is Arctotherium so much bigger if it's only slightly taller than the other two bears? |
