Lion Coalition of 3 Lions - Panthera leo The lion (Panthera leo) is one of the four big cats in the genus Panthera, and a member of the family Felidae. With some males exceeding 250 kg (550 lb) in weight, it is the second-largest living cat after the tiger. Wild lions currently exist in Sub-Saharan Africa and in Asia with an endangered remnant population in Gir Forest National Park in India, having disappeared from North Africa and Southwest Asia in historic times. Until the late Pleistocene, about 10,000 years ago, the lion was the most widespread large land mammal after humans. They were found in most of Africa, across Eurasia from western Europe to India, and in the Americas from the Yukon to Peru. The lion is a vulnerable species, having seen a possibly irreversible population decline of thirty to fifty percent over the past two decades in its African range. The African lion is a very large cat, with males weighing between 330 and 550 pounds and females weighing between 260 and 400 pounds. It is 8 to 10 feet long, not including the tail. Its most famous feature is its mane, which only male lions have. The mane is a yellow color when the lion is young and darkens with age. Eventually, the mane will be dark brown. The body of the African lion is well suited for hunting. It is very muscular, with back legs designed for pouncing and front legs made for grabbing and knocking down prey. It also has very strong jaws that enable it to eat the large prey that it hunts. ![]() Black Rhinoceros - Diceros bicornis An adult Black Rhinoceros stands 140–170 cm (57.9–63 inches) high at the shoulder and is 3.3-3.6 m (10.8–11.8 feet) in length. An adult weighs from 800 to 1364 kg (1,760 to 3,000 lb), but sometimes grows up to 1818 kg (4,000 lb), The females are smaller than the males. Two horns on the skull are made of keratin with the larger front horn typically 50 cm long, exceptionally up to 140 cm. The longest known horn measured nearly 5 feet in length. Sometimes, a third smaller horn may develop. These horns are used for defense, intimidation, and digging up roots and breaking branches during feeding. Skin color depends more on local soil conditions and the rhinoceros' wallowing behavior than anything else, so many black rhinos are typically not truly black in color. The Black Rhino is much smaller than the White Rhino, and has a long, pointed, and prehensile upper lip, which it uses to grasp leaves and twigs when feeding. White Rhinoceros have square lips used for eating grass. The Black Rhinoceros can also be recognized from the White Rhinoceros by its smaller skull and ears. Black Rhinoceros also do not have a distinguishing shoulder hump like the White Rhinoceros. ![]() _______________________________________________________________________

Black Rhino should win this. It has the size, power and durability & endurance to do so. It's also surprisingly fast for its size. I've seen an entire herd of buffalo struggle to even harm a Rhino. These animals are simply build like tanks. Lions are smart, fast, well armed and co-operative animals, but the Rhino just pips it.

I strongly favor an adult rhino over three, four, five maybe even six adult male lions. |

I would guess you got that number of the video Extra posted? http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=hCYMnyHhb4Q#! Please ignore the ridiculous title though. There's a lot of bad blood between tiger fans and lion fans. |

I don't want to speak for Vita but an adult rhino (specifically of the African variety & bulls more so) are just the most dangerous prey I can picture any modern carnivore taking on even lion prides, they're lower to the ground then elephants, can turn fast, incredibly durable & that horn is just so lethal. They're the definition of tanks: ![]() (Credit to Arctos) Those accounts posted by Taipan aren't representative of fully grown mature bulls either so they really have no say in this match up. BTW I don't think anyone takes the titles of Monster J/Donald Gross/ James Redhouses's videos seriously anyways, tho he does have awesome clips. Edited by 221Extra, Oct 15 2012, 01:43 PM.

The Rhino would utterly destroy 3 lions. I actually think 3 lions would stand a better chance against a Elephant than against a Rhino. |

3 Sub Adult Black Rhinos....1 of which was previously injured (said the one killed on June 8th had a leg injury before the attack) Also the one on July 1st involved 3 Male Lions and 1 Lioness (4 Lions in total) and looked to be an ambush (Rhino was drinking and was caught off guard....probably because it has just left it's mother and was an inexperienced sub-adult not fully aware of Lion danger) As for this actual fight.....Well the Black Rhino is the lb for lb toughest Rhino for sure....And probably the toughest lb for lb prey item on land for a Lion/Lion Pride....It is solitary and not that much larger than the Cape Buffalo yet it's almost never predated on....Now alot of that probably has to do with how rare it is but still you can find tons of videos of them chasing Lions off easily and there were 4 accounts I had of them goring and killing Lions. They are the toughest lb for lb prey animal for a Lion to take I think 3 Male Lions would have a chance but it would be a slim one. Edited by tigerburningbright, Dec 14 2012, 01:47 PM.

The attack itself just took 4 minutes. Most of the 40 minutes, the Rhino was screaming. Anyway, I agree with most people here, an adult would be too much. |

We dont usually make up matchups featuring multiples of one species unless they normally exhibit cooperative behaviour. Tigers dont, although there is a rare case of a rhino killed by a tiger and her cubs. Even though the Rhino is favoured here, the lions normally do cooperatively hunt. |
