Hi Kurtz, great shots of Mvula.
I am convinced by right now Mvula is the 2nd biggest leopard of the Sabi Sands right know after Camp Pan.
He has grown even this year and for sure bigger than Tyson I think and Kashane

Hi Marc,
it is difficult to say, sure Tyson at his prime had the edge on mvula, but is difficult to say cause tyson is not more in his prime, while Mvula is at his absolute best age - size

A huge leopard indeed, 180lb seems believable especially considering his bulging stomach. However I think that photograph makes him look larger than he actually is. Pictures are useful but I find how impressive an animal looks often varies considerably with the angle of the shot, the posture of the animal, the relative position of the hunter and of course the size of the hunter. As a result I've often noticed how the same specimen may look fairly mediocre in one photograph but exceptionally big in another.

Here's another photo of the "Musomberi Monster". Though this leopard still looks big and impressive, not nearly to the same degree as in the first shot IMO. http://www.africahunting.com/content/2-hunting-leopard-zimbabwe-950/

And though the head appears enormous in the top photo, at 16 7/8 inches it is big but nothing special. It's not uncommon for male leopards to have skulls measuring over 17 inches and in places like Gabon and Iran a 16 7/8 inch skull would be barely above average. This should give some perspective of how big those leopards are.

I've recently read a very good book on leopard hunting in Zimbabwe which shows a picture of a huge 196lb leopard. I have no reason to doubt the weight given the credibility of the author however in the photo that leopard does not look quite as striking as this one, again I think due to the angle of the shot, the relative positions of the leopard and hunter, and the size of the hunter. I'll post some excerpts from that book when I have some time. I noticed the same thing with pictures of trophy jaguars in Tony Almeida's book. In the photo his biggest jaguar at 262lbs doesn't look particularly special compared to the others though I have no doubt that was indeed a monstrous jag as Almeida described.

i've a question for you: seems to you that a neapolitan mastiff or a boerboel is big? cause this dogs have the same mass of an average 60-70 kg. male leopard in Kruger, but a wild male leopard is more filled out with much more less body fat, more mscular and less bone, shorter muscles in forelegs.
An extreme muscular animal is difficult to judge even from live in at what about his weight.
But the big mistake i think that lot of people do is compare the weight of a human with the weight of a leopard that is the most deceptice think we can do.
