Interesting how these big leopards seen to have small ears. Is it because of their size or most of the ears got chopped off in combat? |

It does seem the size of the ears does not grow in proportion to the head and bigger more massive individuals tend to have relatively smaller looking ears. Not only does this seem to be true within species but also across the different cat species. The smaller cat species seem to have relatively larger ears for their head size than the pantherine cats. A relevant excerpt from the book, "Into the Thorns: Hunting the Cattle Killing Leopards of the Matobo Hills" by Wayne Grant. This refers to a massive Zimbabwean leopard which weighed 196lbs (with very little meat in the stomach) and had a 18.5" skull, the largest reliable I'm aware of from Southern Africa. "...was obvious this was a beast of a leopard. The head was so big and meaty that it appeared to have been stung by bees, the gnarled ears looked much too small on this soccer-ball sized head, and the paws resembled lion's feet. Graham said the whole cat looked abnormally short and blocky."

Very interesting, Chui. If I understood right, it's safe to assume that cartilaginous tissue doesn't follow the growth of the rest of the body. Well, this certainly isn't a handicap for them. They look very healthy! Thank you very much for the info
