One very grand leopard from Algeria. These Barbary leopards were probably among the very biggest. Too bad they're practically extinct now due to lack of attention.

The history of Victor the biggest and stronger leopard ever in colosseum:

Invito Al Colosseo

(…) In natura, infatti, i leoni adulti uccidono i leopardi.

You must translate cause i don't find it in english
His eyes seem almost embedded in the tanned face. Do not distract either for a moment by the muscular body of the opponent. Even now that both are spinning in circles, studied ... On them are the eyes of thousands of people from morning look, incite and shouting from the stands. The Coliseum is started. The first show which opens the day are venationes, which is hunt. Fights between gladiators, not then, but between men and animals. (…) Like the one that has just begun. (…) Among Hunter's blond curls you can see the gleam of sweat. His name is Spittara, but the crowd stopped screaming, so great is the tension. From the front, powerful and self-assured, has one of the great masters of the arena: Victor. It is not a human being, but it could be for intelligence which shows in his fights. (…) Victor, the "winner", is an abnormally large proportions Leopard, soon became the darling of the crowd in so many fights: once pushed his opponent against the body of another Hunter as a sarcastic commentary on the ground just seconds before and he did stumble, then suddenly jumping and biting in throat. (…) Spittara is a skilled Hunter arenas, is well loved by the women for his graceful appearance, but is not famous as Victor. (…) Holding in his hand a thick sharp spear. Has no other: neither armor nor a helmet nor a sword. The only protection cloth leggings are strengthened. A roar through the arena: is that of a lion that has just been released from a port to fight another Hunter. That's what Spittara expected and hoped. Victor was trained very well to not get distracted with the screams of the crowd or its opponents. But the sudden recall of a lion triggers its primordial instinct. In nature, in fact, the adult Lions kill the leopards. It's just a moment, a distraction. The Leopard is coming lightning heads in the direction of the lion. Has just enough time to focus on the shape of the other feline that immediately feels transfixed, just below the Gorge, where the cost. In a split-second distinctly feels the wide blade sink into the rib cage and a stabbing pain. Did not even hear the scream of battle that Spittara issued by clearing the lungs. The man started to attack falling and doing a long pass to give more power to the shot, exactly how do living to sink a JAB. The reaction of the beast is angry. The Leopard's enormous neck crease and tries to bite the spear, but fails. Then gives a powerful paw Lance auction, almost pulling it off from the body. Now manages to bite her and breaks up with his teeth. But it is too late, he feels increasingly weak: sees the silhouette of Spittara standing, almost waiting for the "verdict". If the animal you shoot, for the Hunter, who is without Lance, you put wrong. Maybe give him another, maybe not. But there will be no need. Chantarelles, inexpressive eyes of the Leopard, the silhouette of Spittara fogs. The blood comes out from the wound and ears form a large puddle on the arena, between its legs. The shot was perfect. A final roar, then a rattle and a gurgle due to blood that is invading my throat and lungs. La belva collapses and then falls dead, the mouth Interior. The crowd explodes. A roar rises from the bleachers and screaming the name of Hunter: "Spittara, Spittara". The Coliseum has a new hero.

Great info Kurtz, thanks. From what I understand the Romans got their leopards from North Africa and Turkey mostly. So the leopards used in the Colosseum would have been either of the Barbary or Anatolian/Persian variety.

Barbary leopards were always regarded as being very large, but there's very few details available on their size. According to the "Mammals of Algeria" the leopard described in this early paper weighed over 80kg http://bibdigital.rjb.csic.es/Imagenes/P0063_04/P0063_04_047.pdf. However, I would be much more interested in skull measurements, there must be some Barbary leopard skulls in French collections.

In any case, looking at early photographs of leopards from Morocco and Algeria, some specimen definitely look huge. The one I just posted above looks extraordinarily massive. I wouldn't at all be surprised if it weighs well over 90kg.
