A big male leopard killed by a younger male in Rajasthan, India. The article is written by Adam Bannister, a South African photographer who has photographed big cats all over the world. He is also very familiar with the Sabi Sands leopards and provides an interesting comparison between the two populations. His observations suggest that the leopards of Jawai, an isolated patch of wilderness in Rajasthan generally die younger than the Sabi Sands leopards due to intense competition for the limited space and resources.

Nag Vasi, the deposed dominant male estimated at 8-10 years old.

Bhero, the newcomer in the area estimated at 5-6 years old.

Grow up fast and die young, The accelerated life of a JAWAI Leopard

"It was obvious that he had been in a brutal fight. His body was covered in scratches and puncture wounds; but the most disturbing were the multiple bites to his head where the skull had been pierced a number of times. When big cats fight it seldom ends in death; one protagonist almost always gives up and makes a run for it. If a cat is to die, it is usually due to the subsequent wounds; they crawl into caves or thickets to die quietly and out of sight. The death of Nag Vasi was different. He had obviously been killed on the spot – out in the open on the rocks - his skull fractured and throat crushed. The magnificent blue-eyed male was no longer.

His death allowed me to have a closer look at his body - his extremely long tail, his powerful leg muscles and his phenomenal physique. His condition was magnificent. It also allowed me the rare opportunity to try and age him. I guessed his age to be 8-9 years old and the official Forest Department post mortem declared him to be in good condition aged approximately 10. He was huge, but he was not old!"

This may be a common trend throughout much of India where the growing human population and limited land available for wildlife is likely increasing intraspecific competition among the cats.

Hello guys, here are some photos of what i think is by far the most impressive male in the Sabi Sands, and one of the largest in Africa, the Anderson male. [Anderson, The Ghost in the darkness
Also known as The Ghost, he is always lurking in the shadows and keeping an extremely low profile. Seeing this 7 year old male leopard is truly something spectacular and out of this world. He is huge, a true beast incarnate with ice cold eyes and black eye shadow under his eyes, truly intimidating if he stares at you. Anderson came into our area about a year ago and since then he has just dominated where ever he roams. He is incredibly huge and also very muscular for his size, and he will just get bigger with time. He has already had encounters with other male leopards in the area like Tingana and Lamula. No battle has commenced, yet. He does not have a lot of scars on his face, he has not had to be a fighter yet, for now. His empire is expanding, and fast. We have seen him and Lamula walking side by side, pushing Lamula out of his territory. These guys did not fight, because both of them risk getting injured. He’s the father of Nsele, female leopard’s cubs. They truly look like mini Andersons. He is sometimes seen with them. His grandfather is the famous, Tjololo. This means that Anderson came from the Mala-Mala area, to here with one mission, to take over. One afternoon while we were out on drive, we found him on a freshly killed impala. We arrived maybe minutes too late for the actual killing action. He first dragged the carcass into a thick bush which is typical of him. For some reason, he doesn’t like the paparazzi to much, a shy character indeed. He then proceeded with his lunch to a big tree. With his amazing strength he carried a young impala male that weighs about 50 kg, in his mouth, up a tree. The muscles in a leopard’s are able to lock, thus making them excellent tree climbers. He had his kill safe in a tree until the scavenger arrived, a spotted hyena. Hyenas will often follow the scent of other predators, waiting patiently for scraps, or even worse, to steal it from them. Mr. Anderson fed on his impala kill until it was finished, without being disturbed. The smell of fear was in the air that afternoon, for this soldier of fortune, is still in his prime. His time is now. Watch out for this ghost on safari. You might be extremely lucky, to meet the new king of leopards.Posted Image[/IMG]Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image
