Vintage photos of some leopards hunted in the Congo. Huge leopard. ![]() This one looks robust like a jaguar. ![]() For comparison here is a similar photograph of a 90kg male jaguar being weighed in Venezuela. From Hoogesteijn and Mondolfi's 1993 book. ![]() |

The Ridge Male of Masai Mara. Reputedly a very huge male, certainly has that typical compact and stocky build of Mara males.![]() In contrast, the huge Ivan of Yala has more of a chiseled robust look typical of Sri Lankan males. ![]() Another Yala male with a buffalo. Would be pretty epic to see a big leopard taking one down.

Yala males always so impressive! A quick comparison between one of your previous picture, chui, of a dead congo leopard and a sumatran tiger. ![]() _________________ Indian black leopard:

Hey Maneater, cool comparison. Though I think that's probably a young or female Sumatran tiger, the leopard easily compares in overall robustness and appears to have a proportionately more massive head. Also really cool picture of that Indian black leopard. As your picture clearly demonstrates, the more solid colouration of black leopards and jaguars shows muscle definition much better in good lighting as opposed to the normal spotted coat which obscures the contours of their muscles. This is why cougars and lionesses often look very aesthetically muscular. It would be pretty awesome to see a huge melanistic leopard from the Rift Valley forests of Ethiopia or Kenya where they are relatively common. Here's another shot of that monster Ethiopian leopard that was shot unfortunately. Imagine seeing a leopard built like this in the black phase. ![]() Also look at how broad the head is. These highland leopards tend to have very broad skulls, some in the hunting records are 200mm or more in width, that's broader than the average adult male Pantanal jaguar skull! Looking at leopards like this it seems perfectly believable. |
