Rhulani 74 kg male

Very intereting info from a ( average ) prime male leopard in The Sabi Sands.

I contacted the man who was part of the team of darting and collaring this male leopard Gerrie Camacho.
They weighted Rhulani and he weighted 74 kg.

He said that for a prime leopard in this area that is not a huge male....
So as I said before, Sabi Sands holds some male over 80 kg or even 90kg plus...

Unfortunately that muscle mass almost " hypertrophic " is supported and built by a both "krazy" quality and quantity of food, combined with a workload accumulated in 5-8 years; all impossible(or so) in captivity or in circuit of domestication.
We can have some leopards similar Nkosi or bigger like Madiba etc. in captiviy, but is truly not the very same thing.
That is the same even for a lot of predators.

What a surprise to see that a little museum not so far from my home was holding a very interesting specimen of stuffed black leopard from Africa naturalised by Rowland Ward.

More precisely, this is a museum based on Arican trophy hunting killed by a french Baron named Gourgaud.
The interesting thing is that the animals killed and showed in this collection all come from Mount Kenya, Kilimandjaro and Sudan.
So this black specimen likely come from the Mount Kenya, reputed for his melanistic panthers.

While he is stuffed, we can see, regardless, he should have been a very impressing specimen while alive, with stocky build avec big powerful skull. This corroborate the description made by hunters on the Mount Kenya/Aberdares leopard who say that it is bigger and stronger than the savanna one.

Another interesting stuff, a common spotted leopard and another one with an unusual coat from the same museum:

Cool find ManEater. I'm sure there's lots of valuable material on African wildlife in French museums. Particularly North, West, and Central Africa were all largely under French colonial rule so a lot of info on animals from these regions will naturally be from French/Belgian sources. Also see your PM.

A big stocky male from Masai Mara Kenya.

And a big powerful male from Laikipia Kenya. Laikipia is a drier hilly region in central Kenya to the north of the Aberdares mountains.

Hamu definitely looks like an old bruiser with all his battle scars. He doesn't appear to be as muscular as some of the other mature males in Yala but he has a big mean looking head. In particular notice how massive his muzzle looks, a feature which gives Sri Lankan males a more jaguar or lion like appearance IMO.

He's also easy to identify, see the arrow shaped marking on the right side of his forehead.

Steyn Villiers, he is a famous ranger in SA. He was the guy witnessing the Tjelejanga male leopard fighting the 4 lionesses and survive in the Sabi Sands.

I talked with him over huge leopards en the biggest one he has ever seen is this guy.
He is following him and they trie to catch him for their research program.

His name is Hoedini...

look at the mass of this male...his head..his muzzle..so wide..

Wow. Agreed Marc that does look like a very impressive leopard.

Another huge male from Kruger. This guy is estimated to weigh 90kg apparently, just an estimate but impressive leopard nonetheless.
