One of Yala's recent dominant males- Dhunda. According to the photographer, he is supposedly the biggest but that title has been given to other current males as well (Ivan, Hamu etc) so I don't think that means much. In any case all mature dominant males from Yala look like imposing and battle hardened beasts. For some context, Yala block 1 which is open to tourists/photographers is occupied by 3-5 territorial males at a given time. "What a storied face. Dhunda is the largest male leopard in Yala and is quite old. Still pretty handsome for an old guy right? Dhunda was unmoved by our presence as if to say, “Ah. These fools again.” He came fairly close to our jeep, posed beautifully for a few minutes, yawned, then strutted across the road giving us this one last glance as he crossed. What a face." https://www.instagram.com/flamingrobot/ ![]() I'm pretty sure this is the same male who was featured in the Leopard Battleground episode of NG series Night Stalkers. He would've been in his prime then. See from 6:40. |

Some big males recently camera trapped in the central highlands of Sri Lanka. Robust looking leopards. Interestingly, the 2 biggest and broadest male leopard skulls I know of from Sri Lanka (total of 10) were both from the central highlands. I wonder how these males would compare with those from Yala. The Yala males generally look really cool IMO with their menacing lion like heads, but some have relatively gaunt bodies (like Hamu) while others seem really heavily built (like Ivan). On the other hand, the leopards in Wilpattu generally don't look that impressive. It's interesting to note these possible differences in the appearance of leopards in different habitats of Sri Lanka, a relatively small island. I would be curious to see if they hold true with proper data and what the driving forces behind them would be (prey abundance, prey type, climate etc). EC Fernando, a Sri Lankan taxidermist who handled a large number of leopards hunted on the island suggested the differences are primarily due to prey availability in addition to age. He states in his 1968 paper: "Even in Ceylon there are two vaguely separable types. The massive and stockily built ones, others lankier and more slenderly built. The size of a leopard, its skull etc, will depend largely on the availability of food and the age of the specimen under examination."![]() ![]() ![]()

Another extremely retarded kid withoud basic lore write to me i should be learning. You shpould be learn if you thing the weight of african leopards is same as asian. IN FACT:stanard weight of female is 60kg male 80kg...this is what you wiriting is illogical..You think the leopard is imilar to weight of german shepherd? mope. Leopards have massive bones they are much longer and muscular. I know guy who own female cougar and she's weight is 67kg and the leopard are bigger than cougars then is impossible the maximum weight of male leopard is 60kg...Even wikipedia confirms what i wrote. https://i.imgur.com/gBHwJa4.jpg Edited by lampart, Oct 3 2017, 02:30 AM.

I, an "extremely retarded kid," am in fact a biology student who found hilarious the lack of knowledge you demonstrate in this topic. As you have, apparently, been a member since 2015, I would believe that, in all those years, you did learned something in this forum. Instead, you show us all these posts, that are on a "youtube commentary section" level, full of random things you found in children's books and Wikipedia. Seriously, take a book about big cats, not one full of drawings to fill and stuff like that, a proper scientific book, and learn. Being stupid by choice is the worst kind of stupidity.
