Assuming there was a 500kg amphicyon ingens,it was the only dog like caniformid I could think of that could reach exceptional weights, would it be stronger that a 500 kg smilodon populator?

I doubt it - Smilodons were very robust and muscular, probably more than any canid.

While borophaginae dogs were very robust, I doubt they were to the extent smilodon populator was.

How robust do you think they were? if you don't think they were less robust than populator.

Canidae > Felinae at same weight:
Dinocrocuta

The skull of a very large wolf (weighing between 100 and 120lbs) with that of a tom cougar (weighing between 120 and 150lbs, estimated).

15 kg and under canids hold a clear advantage.

Around 50 kg the cats come into a league of there own.

Look at the wolf cougar skulls, the cougar is likely heavier but their canine teeth are almost same size and wolf's skull is larger.

That bone size can't be right, the rest of the wolfs body must be like 160~lbs if the skull is that large.

There's much more to it than skulls, a wolf skull would also appear large next to a leopards for example

Depends on the cat and the dog in question.

The now extinct borophagins were stronger than most similar sized cats. As for extant canids.... I think big cars can wrestle better though they're not necessarily stronger lb for lb. modern would canids aren't especially robust, so a 130 lbs cougar may overpower a 130 lbs wolf but that same cougar would struggle to do the same with a 130 lbs ovcharka/kangal/boerboel I'm not saying it'd be a mismatch bc cats don't rely exclusively on their ability to overpower their prey in a hunt, for example I don't think a 150 kg lioness is stronger than a 400 kg zebra stallion, we also have accounts of male tigers killing bull gaurs and I doubt a 220 kg tiger can overpower a 800-1000 kg bull.

Cats can grapple better than dogs, but grappling ability isn't enough to overpower a similar sized opponent imo, what grappling does though is help the cat latch onto and close in for a kill, but if you ask me, canids have better bites and stronger necks/jaws for their size, they also have bigger heads.

Hope that helps!
