This thread actually brought up one really interesting subject that goes mostly unnoticed - the arthropod - vertebrate predation in general. Some of these feats are quite mind boggling imo, such as the mantis predation on hummingbirds or that water bug with that ridiculously huge snake for example. In general, arthropods are recorded to prey on: bats, rodents, lizards, frogs, birds, fish, snakes, salamanders, and the most powerful land arthropod-the coconut crab- can even catch and eat rats. The usual mindset is to look at arthropods as prey items for more complex life forms, but reality is much richer than that. |

I agree, until wild dog showed pictures, I never would have thought it was capable that a 4 gram mantis could kill humming birds and giant snakes, this just shows how unknown arthropods are. |

At least scorpions have their pincers I believe if we're strictly talking no venom its: 1) Scorpion 2) Mantis 3) Pede 4) Tarantula The Tarantula is purely based off ambush & venom; it's a below subpar fighter without the element of surprise. |

Wrong buddy, in a head on fight a centipede will beat any other arthropod Why are scorpions first? Their pincers are weak, and their jaws are puny. Edited by Black Ice, Aug 22 2012, 08:03 AM.

Perhaps I stand corrected. In any Tarantula vs Scorpion fight I've seen, if the Scorpion is at least half the size of the Spider it wins. In one size parity fight between an Emperor Scorpion and Goliath Tarantula; the Scorpion won without effort. I don't know how much that has to do with venom but the Scorpion in general seems to be well build for combat. Armed skin, spiked tail, and deadly pincers (by insect standards). |

What are you basing this off of? Emperor Scorpions have very strong pincers to make up for their relatively weak venom, so I honestly don't know where you're getting this 'weak' pincers from.

Your first cruelty video shows the Scorpion having a vice like grip on the Pede's head, the 2nd video again shows the Scorpion's incredible hold, 3rd is a large Camel Spider attack a relatively small Scorpion (I've seen shitloads of fights with Scorpions & Camel Spiders & every time when they're of similar size the Scorpion wins) & the 4th video is a big Tarantula against a Smaller Scorpion & the Spider still struggled. Your last cruelty video shows a much bigger Camel Spider & a smaller scorpion; I don't see what you're trying to prove. Edited by 221Extra, Aug 22 2012, 08:18 AM.

Vod said that scorpions have beaten spiders twice as big The centipede had its fangs in the scorpions pincers while the scorpion had athe legs The last few show their pincers are good for holding nothing more And it just shows scorpions cant use their stingers against pedes as killing weapons, nor do their pincers kill anything Scorpions are not above centipedes My bad I forgot the cruelty thing Edited by Black Ice, Aug 22 2012, 08:23 AM.

It looked like to me that the Pede couldn't escape the the Scorpion's grip & they show the Scorpion's grip is incredibly strong & nearly impossible to break free. |

Are you basing this off 1 video; where the scorpion looked disinterested but was still holding the Pede down? The vid you showed is that Scorpion has a strength advantage & could easily disembowel the Centipede if need be. |

Disembowel? They dont disembowel anything buddy, the vid I showed wasnt to assert pedes being superior It was to show scorpions have absolutely no way of killing the centipede, while centipedes can bite through their armor, the scorp can hold it, but thats about all You never hear of scorpions disemboweling anything. That scorp was interested in eating the grasdhopper, yet I saw no disemboweling of anything. Edited by Black Ice, Aug 22 2012, 08:40 AM.

I'll let you interpret this however you want, but's clear your video contradicts your argument. |
