sure there is always a risk but we're looking at predatory skill, it takes for more physical attributes to take a large adversary than a venomous one, sure there's always the risk of being bitten but capturing one isn't impressive it's just the ever constant danger |

you can step on small yet highly venomous snake and crush it, yes you were at risk of being bitten when you did it but is that fact you managed to kill it wihtout getting bit impressive? Now you kill a python that is larger than you, now that's impressive. High risk doesn't always equal impressive |

Neither does taking something bigger. I can kill a on the verge of dying in seconds bull elephant with a knife, by your logic, its much bigger therefore its impressive. So bloody what? A lion kills a big croc on land. So bloody what? Lions kill buffalo, so bloody what? It happens so often you dont care anymore Killing something bigger does not make ut impressive either. You just arent used to hearing it. If i said a tiger killed a 15ft croc from ambush on land, would that be impressive? No. Edited by Black Ice, Oct 13 2012, 02:03 PM.

you don't think a lone big cat killing a bigger croc on land is the least b it impressive? I've only witnessed two accounts of that happening so you're telling me if a tiger took a 18 ft male saltie thst wouldn't at least have it's own thread on Carnivora? You must understand the bigger it is the more durable, stornger, and harder to restrian and kill. The reason we don't make big deals of lone lions killing buffalo too much is becuase lions are skilled macropredators and by now we all know buffalo are part of their regualr diet, buy what if a tiger killed a king cobra or a lion slaughtered a balck mamba, not really a feat huh? The only thing that might make it the very least bit impressive is there is a risk you'll get bitten and that's it, it's not like the animal is any harder to combat and kill it's just the predator has a higher risk of being envenomated that's purely it it doesn't require much predatory ability especially if it's an ambush on a less robust snake (like the tarantula did) the snke would be dead before it even realized what was happening now I'd like to see a tarantula try and successfully ambush a brown tree snake 3 times it's size and see how that works out, that would be a real feat. |

It won't get it's own thread because it's impressive. It will get one because it's uncommon as bloody crocodiles don't venture on land often especially the larger ones.
You must understand a venemous animal only needs one hit to kill you. If you fail at an ambush on a bigger animal, you can always run away, get bit by a black mamba, your dead.
A king cobra has bitten lioness before and killed them, yet if i show the vid you will blow it off despite you saying taking a bigger animal is more impressive.
You obviously look at things as impressive just because they are bigger and downgrade venemous animals purely because they have venom which they didn't ask to be given. But whatever im done here. Edited by Black Ice, Oct 14 2012, 12:05 AM.

^ before you dissapointingly storm off answer me this: you think the tarantula in the vid was aware the snake was venomous? You think it took secondary precautions to avoid being bitten? You think it required some predatory skill/knowledge to take out the snake? YES it could have went wrong YES it could've been bitten but it's not like the spider knew and had to apply and special manuvers or anything taking down the snake was dangeorus but the spider never knew it was in danger or that in one bite the snake could kill it. It didn't take any measures to avoid beign bitten so conclusion? That wasn't predatory skill at work that was chance.

Assuming we use the largest specimen for each insect? Mantis - 7 inches, 24 grams. Scorpion - 9 inches, 56 grams. Tarantula - 12 inches, 170 grams. Centipede - 13 inches, how many grams? Regardless, I think the Spider and Centipede would win, the Scorpion would stalemate and the Mantis would loose. |
