I agree with Icestorm this thread is truly disturbing morally and mentally. All I cna say is we all agree to treat humans with respect and we all agree to treat animals with respect, to what extent or degree we choose to do so is totally up to you, how on earth did this even come to a heated religion vs atheism arguement, and disputes over wiping out the human species? It was a simple question
I never intended it to disturb people. But the thing is, we've already had some other big controversy threads. I'm sorry if I did anything wrong.

Actually I make donations to my local half way house all the time. Sometimes its money, but it's usually clothes, food and furniture because it goes directly to the people. Food more than anything else though. At my place of employment we prefer to give away the excess food when the day is done rather than toss it away. My town is pretty small (a population of 50k people.) Of course this wouldn't be possible if I worked at large franchise or something because people would get fired for giving away food. Giving money to homeless people is seldom a good idea (I can spot an abuser from a mile away.) But if someone needs a dollar I'll usually give it to them because its just a dollar. And here's the kicker, I'm not "wealthy" and I can still do all these things.

Hmm, apologies Vita I shouldn't have had such a knee jerk reaction, I didn't know you did such things and due to my easily irritable nature I quickly jumped to assumptions.

However you must admit helping animals is a lot more difficult than helping people as you must either physically help the creature or donate money to some sort of reliable charity, whereas for homeless people you can give away things such as food or clothing.
The problem with giving away money to charities is that a lot of them cut too much into the donations and certain people get to pocket the money. The ones you see advertised on t.v often do that. It's better to donate directly to a local shelter. Or at least check into these charities to make sure majority of the donations are going to where it's supposed to be.

Animal shelters are always in need of food, blankets and foster homes. Sometimes tossing money at something just isn't enough.

Some people may feel offended now but: Humans are like a pest imo. They multiply uncontrolled, take anything they want to, don´t give anything back and wipe out anything (other humans included) if they don´t immediately get what they desire. Not only do they differ between "important" and "less important" (non human-)animals but they even differ between "important" and "less important" humans based on money, jobs, cars, clothing, origin or freaking friends on facebook.

Also they take the independence and freedom of an entire species and turn them into "pets" (domestic dogs, cats, horses etc). If "domesticated animals" don´t obey "human rules" they´ll get murdered after being taken away from their natural families. Even if they obey "our rules" they´ll eventually get abandoned, starve, shot or die another painful death a million times a day worldwide because of humans. First we create "domestic animals" then we don´t care for them or even hate and try to make them suffer for being a particular type of domestic animal (certain dog breeds for instance). Some domestic animals are considered "bloodthirsty monsters" based on "stereotype" or "what they were bred for" regardless of socialisation. If abandoned "domestic animals" adapt to wildlife they´ll eventually be considered a "pest" and get hunted (and wiped out). Only humans have the right to influence an eco system right? Humans are shallow, self-centered, bloodthirsty and by far less intelligent than they claim to be.

Then there´s the fact that loads if not any carnivore will eventually go extinct because of human population and a human´s power to decide whether a species has the "right" to exist or not. I´d like to discover and study Thylacines (for instance) in their natural habitat but oh wait, human beings wiped them out after claiming their natural habitat.

On top of that they´ll even pick on other humans who don´t think that humans are "more important" or "of higher value" than other animals and/or say something like "you don´t like humans? why not live with (other) animals then?" even though it´s obvious that people are bound to the modern society due to socialisation which goes to show that humans aren´t even as "social" as they claim to be. If one doesn´t support/share the general point of view he/she will end up being considered insane (sometimes).

Not even close, I would slaughter a 1,000 dolphins before killing a single human.
So you would rather kill 1000 of an endangered species possibly smarter than us than just one human?! Animals are equal to us.. We may beat them at intelligence but dolphin might take that away and we don't have cheetah's speed, elephant's size and honey badger's fearlessness, they beat us at those and we are animals with our own valuable feature

Congratulations FelinePowah on your receipt of such a courteous response from that sterling example of manners personified, the one and (hopefully) only Fragillimus335.
Why thank you good sir, even though you are not the most pleasant person, or the most emphatic, I would still save you over the dolphins, that is what being sentient is all about.
And sentience is a feature that all vertebrates and possibly some octopodes have.

I know Fragillimus335 is gone, but that will not stop me from correcting a misleading statement.

It looks like most people criticizing the idea of humans and animals being equal use arguments like "killing another person is not the same as killing an animal". Of course you can't treat humans in the same way as other animals, because other humans are species members and H. sapiens is a very social species, but that doesn't mean that you have to believe that the species is more worth than other animals.

I kinda agree with Arm0r.
Also, I usually value life by it's rareness. For exemple, if I had to chose between the life of a single amur leopard and the lifes of a few dozen humans, or even a hundred, I'll would let the cat live. I think the loss of a single rare animal is much more mournable than the death of a lot of people, also because of genetic patrimony, loss of gene pool and etc.
Yes, before the question is asked, I do value my family and friends over animals, and maybe I'm hypocritical and amoral, but... Well, it's life.

Very interesting topic, but here is food for thought. Whose life would you spare? Amur leopard's of which we have few dozens in the world? Or poacher's who right after shooting leopard will shoot you just because you saw him poaching. Very soon I am going to be national park ranger and I know whose life will have more value to me. It's all dependant on situation your in. Just remember that poachers dont know the courtesy to shout "stand or I will shoot" they will kill you on sight.

Perhaps I should have worded that statement better, as I knew that Fragillimus got banned. What I really wanted to know was why he got banned.

What if the 1,000 dolphins you would be willing to murder belonged to an endangered species and amounted to 90% of the total world population?
I would, of course, still kill the dolphins. I doubt anyone on this forum would actually chose to kill another human being instead of some dolphins, if yo do, you got some evolving left to do.... Everyone who says they respect animals just as much as people is either full of shit or just saying it for shock value.

I wouldn't be happy about killing the dolphins, but I would do it to save a human life.
Oh my god.
Your god was pretty keen on animal sacrifices... :D No offense...it's true.

What you're saying is that you would pick up a gun, and blow a little girl's brains out to save a pod of dolphins.... You need to think that through a little better.
If I was in that situation I would grab that fucking gun and blow that little girls fucking brains out. I don't know the girl so I wouldn't fucking care, you would sacrafice the life of 1000's of animals to save some bitch that you don't know and don't care about but you would save her over countless others just because she is human...
