The same logic applies to humans. I don't see how the value of a certain species is downgraded by how moral it is. The first land plants (that arguably were a trigger for some mass extinctions: http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn21417-first-land-plants-plunged-earth-into-ice-age.html#.VRCJFShj1sY ) should have been ashamed of themselves as well. |

Because I value my own species more. Their extinction won't have too much negatively effects: http://www.nature.com/news/2010/100721/full/466432a.html To answer your question, insects that are too dangerous to humans are of low value, while mammals are high value. Call me a classist, but I value my own class more. |

What makes us different from the plants is that we are aware of our actions. While I agree that certain species we could do without, I don't see how it being mammal or otherwise makes a difference. Though sure, if we were to exterminate hippos, a dangerous animal, compared to mosquitoes acting as vectors, it would be more visual and percieved differently. |

You are of course allowed to think like that (I'd also prefer my species over others, even though you should present this more as an opinion than as a fact), but I disagree with species that have little importance in an ecosystem having no right to exist at all. After all, your article acknowledges that at least some lifeforms benefit from them. |

It depends what you mean by equal. If by equal you mean that they have a right to be free from abuse then absolutely. If by equal you mean that when a person owns a pet that he or she is obligated to feed, clean, and give said pet shelter and water, then absolutely. I am also staunchly opposed to sport hunting as I personally consider it unethical. However, if by equal you mean that animals should have the right to sue their owners in a court of law, then no, because that's not realistic. (Keep in mind that I realize you are not arguing this. However, some people are. Look up a man named Cass Sunstein) If by equal you mean that pets should be able to file lawsuits against companies for selling products made out of their hides, then no. Because that's not realistic. I consider myself an ardent advocate of animal welfare. I do agree with a couple of the philosophies of the animal rights folks, though.
