That prejudice though, I doubt RojJones will be able to comprehend anything that doesn't fit with his blinkered and warped viewpoint.

I think RojJones was touched as a child by a Hyena.

Hyena is love. Hyena is life.

Meh, RojJones isn't that bad. I've seen worse (eg. Vivec back in October 2012, Ursus panthera, etc...) At least he posts interesting videos.

Hyenas AND canids. Hyenas are similar to canids. Dog eater can kill a hyena. Meat hyenas stinks. Lions and Leopards not eating stink hyena meat.

Lion not eating stink hyena meat:
Hyenas are not similar to canids. Hyenas are classified in feliformia and canids in caniformia, making hyenas more closely related to cats than to canids.

I like the co-evolution between spotted hyena and African lion; it is interesting. Hyenas get a bad rep; but they are the ones that are doing better as it is now. The paper Ursus shared shows that spotted hyenas are one of the smartest carnivores. I like the fission-fusion social structure of spotted hyenas, however I wouldn't want to be a spotted hyena due to their rather nasty dominance hierarchy. Wild painted dogs are just as interesting; they show even greater hunting success and are very cooperative. But due to their tight cooperation they are unable to deal with loss of pack members. Hyenas are more flexible; they can hunt alone, in pairs, or in large groups. In Ethiopia spotted hyenas live on the streets. They are not threatened with extinction; whereas lions are.

We have parts of the world in which we lack several species of social carnivores and it will be interesting where that leads to. Wolves in parts of the world as well as dingoes, do not face much competition so I'm imagining that their is no natural push to drive them to more complex social behaviour. That's what I think based on what've read. The social structures had to diverge and they are different solutions to the problems created by the environment. With human disturbances, structures that are not flexible enough die out. That spotted hyenas, wolves and dingoes do better has a reason. Mesopredators do even better of course. Higher reproduction, smaller, flexible, generalist and so on. That's what I think anyway; of course I could be wrong.
