Indeed "The hyaenids seem not to have a markedly stronger bite than the big hypercarnivorous canids (see Van Valkenburgh, 1991), such as Canis lupus and Lycaon, although Crocuta has the highest carnassial and canine bite forces of any species of comparable size, and is only surpassed by much larger ursids and the lion and the tiger." -Bite forces, canine strength and skull allometry in carnivores (Mammalia, Carnivora) |
