Doesn't matter what the title says, it looks like a coyote, I've seen a lot of pics labelled as jaguar when it's actually a leopard, and viceversa.
Here's another photo by Tom Brakefield that might depict the same incident and clearly shows a coyote.

There is no way that's the same cougar, the one Hyaena posted was a tank, that cougar looks scrawny in comparison. Still that wolf does resemble a coyote a lot.

That is a wolf, admittedly not a huge one but most definetly not a coyote where the size difference would be much more dramatic. Western coyotes, even large individuals would struggle to hit 40 lbs. That's 1/4 the size of a reasonably sized male cougar.

The picture most likely shows a normal 80-90 lb female wolf against a large 160-180 lb male cougar.

The largest wolf subspecies only manage around 110 lbs for males, exceptional individuals around 20-30 lbs heavier, much less than that of Northern Cougars particularly in Canada where 150-160 lbs is the average.

Its a perfect picture however which always makes it look subject to staging.

I really hope you are joking, there's no way for one that cougar is 160-180lbs. Just look how skinny it is. And the so called wolf it looks like a coyote. Is maybe 40lbs
maybe.. Both look small.. Sure its only a picture but you can some idea of the size.. Where I come from 40lbs is not that large for them.. i dk is that even a real pic.
Seems fake to me.. Guess I need to find my glasses, it just looks odd.

A stretching cougar looks thinner than one sitting.

Even if that is the cause, it's still a fishy pic. A wolf that size wouldn't stand around and get slapped in the head by a Cougar that size.

Listen smart ass maybe you should read the the whole topic before commenting. I was clearly referring to the first picture. The second picture shows a cougar cub chasing a coyote.

Coyotes in the West average less than 30 lbs even for males, 40 lbs would be a huge individual. Even in there North Eastern range 40 lbs is fairly large, although by no means exceptional. This picture was stated to be shot in Montana and furthermore cougars have been all but exterminated from the Eastern part of North America.
