Those dogs are really really lucky that the elephant didn't charge. |

I don't think the elephant knew quite were to put himself. He's probably never encountered creatures that small with so much front. |

I agree. AWD and Hyenas almost always scatter at the sight of Elephants. I wonder if these dogs have encountered a lot of elephants before. |

The elephant doesn't want to waste his time and energy on such relatively small and weak animals. |

Elephants are not afraid of smaller animals, in my experience. They simply are made uneasy by them because elephants cannot see directly under their heads. They cope with this unease by destroying the smaller creature. You'd be surprised how many times we walk in to see a rat made into a pancake. (You'd also be surprised to see a rat flattened into a structure only a couple centimeters in height). Here is my personal experience with elephants and dogs: One day we were walking the elephants around the zoo for exercise before it opens (a daily form of exercise of about 1.2 miles per elephant). There was a dog on the other side of the main zoo fence in a park that neighbors the zoo. The dog was barking at the elephant, who did not move forward because the keeper told her not too, although she was clearly excited (her tells are ear flapping and head shaking, with her trunk in her mouth, whistling like we do with out fingers). As he knew I was watching, the keeper asked if I was curious what the elephant would do. I said of course I was curious, so he gave the elephant a mild release command (yes they can understand such nuances). The elephant proceeded to try to slowly push the fence down with her head to get to the dog (a task at which she was succeeding). I assume he knew this would happen, because he smiled and laughed and called the elephant back. Who happily obeyed, enjoying the excitement of the moment. Elephants love to use their power. I have only seen elephants afraid of two things: other elephants and people. Everything else they meet with a mischievous confidence and a desire to break most items, both living and dead. Wow lucky you to have worked with such cool animals. Would you consider Elephants to be one of the most intelligent animals you have worked with??? |

Yes, by a long shot. Nothing that I have worked with can touch them. |

I've seen hyenas attacking a young elephant. So I don't see why African wild dogs couldn't. |

This is a joke, right? Even a pack of mastiffs with that lion in the picture thrown in would get stomped by an elephant. |

hey Sicilianu, that was an interesting/insightful account. One more question for you-how would you rank an elephants intelligence to cetaceans? |
