"fcourse intuitively you'd assume your cattle were at great risk from grizzly bears, but all signs that I see suggest they actually aren't. "

Once again
In Canada /USA wolves are the biggest problem to cattle ranchers.
In Africa lions are the biggest problem to cattle ranchers.
When the wolf population increased in the United States or Canada, depredation events increased proportionately.
The same can be true for Africa. Unfortunately African lion populations are declining .

Recently wolves (not bears) and coyotes/feral dogs (for calves )are the biggest problem to cattle ranchers.
"Indeed, cattle and the attitudes of their owners (not to mention the accompanying firepower) were major reasons that grizzly bears landed on the Endangered Species Act in 1975".Both can be true.
.
BTW.Grazier,where you live?

"Well agree to disagree, there is no notable aversion to cattle production in Alaska, there are few people and not much in the way of improved pasture, the cattle numbers are perfectly in line with these factors. People, like the kilchers, are still grazing free ranging herds in grizzly country and suffering minimal losses. "
Alaska has the second fewest cattle in the United States

"People, like the kilchers, are still grazing free ranging herds in grizzly country and suffering minimal losses."
In Alaska , a very few people like kilchers still grazing free ranging herds,"
Anyway :Even kilchers have some problems with bears
"But surviving the constant threat from predators at the head of the bay is a bigger concern.
You know, if a bear comes up while she's having a calf, she's as good as dead.
00:06:12Otto: There's just no sense feeding an animal all winter and sending it up there for lunch for a bear"

"Livestock guarding dogs evolved symbiotically with the domestication of sheep, they have no historical relationship with cattle. Cattle have always historically been unprotected, turns out they're quite good at protecting themselves. Today SOME people might keep LGDs with cattle but these are usually livestock guardian dog enthusiasts doing it essentially for fun. "

"Anatolian shepherds are unique in that they become one of the flock that they protect 24/7.

Across South Africa these dogs are guarding goats, sheep and cattle, and according to Cilliers, they are so good that they generally reduce the number of livestock killed by predators by between 97-100percent."
http://www.iol.co.za/news/science/its-a-dogs-life-for-cheetahs-7404641
"By 2005, Cheetah Outreach had
placed 125 shepherds. Over that period,
livestock loss due to predation
on participating farms was reduced
by 95 to 100 percent (Rust 2011). In
the 86 established sheep, goat, and
cattle herds in cheetah range, total
annual losses to predation went
from 1,815 without guard dogs to
14 after dog placement.1 According
to a recent study, the annual
net savings of the average farmer
in CO’s guarding dog program is
$2,500 (Rust 2011,13)."

I find it improbable that the serpent can swallow the prey and survive... you have pictures at the end?
