African Civet - Civettictis civetta The African Civet (Civettictis civetta) is the largest representative of the African Viverridae. It is the sole member of its genus. African Civets can be found from coast to coast across sub-Saharan Africa. They are primarily nocturnal and spend the day sleeping in dense vegetation. During the night, when they are the most active, they can be found in a wide variety of habitat consisting of thick forest to open country. The African Civet is a solitary mammal that is easily recognizable by its unique coloration; the black and white stripes and blotches covering the coarse pelage of the animal are extremely variable and allow it to be cryptic. The black bands surrounding the African Civet’s eyes closely resemble those to the raccoon. Other distinguishing features of the African Civet are its disproportionately large hindquarters and its erectile dorsal crest. The African Civet is an omnivorous generalist, taking small vertebrates, invertebrates, eggs, carrion, and vegetable matter. It is capable of taking on poisonous invertebrates (such as the millipedes most other species avoid) and snakes. Prey is primarily detected by smell and sound rather than by sight. Weight can range from 7 to 20 kg (15 to 44 lb), with an average mass of about 12.5 kg (28 lb). Head-and-body length is 67 to 84 cm (26 to 33 in), while the tail is 34 to 47 cm (13 to 19 in) and shoulder height averages 40 cm (16 in). Civettictis civetta is a stocky animal with a long body and appears short-legged for its size although its hind limbs are noticeably larger and more powerful. ![]() Common Wombat - Vombatus ursinus The common wombat (Vombatus ursinus), also known as the coarse-haired wombat or bare-nosed wombat, is a marsupial, one of three species of wombats and the only one in the genus Vombatus. The common wombat grows to an average of 98 cm (39 in) long and a weight of 26 kg (57 lb). It is widespread in the cooler and better watered parts of southern and eastern Australia, including Tasmania, and in mountain districts as far north as the south of Queensland, but is declining in Western Victoria and South Australia. Common wombats are sturdy and built close to the ground. When fully grown they can reach anywhere between 80 and 130cm, and between 17 and 40kg. The wombats found on Tasmania and Flinders Island are often smaller than their mainland counterparts. It is distinguished from both Hairy-nosed wombats by the fact that it has a bald nose. _______________________________________________________________________________
An aardvark's weight is typically between 40 and 65 kilograms (88 and 140 lb) - and too large for a Civet. |

I go with the wombat. Civets don't particularly impress me, and the marsupial can be twice its opponent, and it's pretty well defended. |

the wombat wins since it is much larger and they can be quite formidable. this is an account of a man being mauled by a wombat http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/australasia/australian-man-mauled-in-rare-attack-by-wombat-1937850.html wombat wins this about 80% of the time. |

IMO the wombat wins, but if we take the maximum weights for the civet and the average weights for the wombat maybe it can be fair and there I can favor the civet. And while the wombat can use it's head as a weapon, the civet can use it's claws and it's jaws to fight with: a bit like Polar Bear vs Iberian Spanish Fighting Bull. Civet skull: There are also cases of African Civets attacking honey badgers, this is a report posted by Elephantus: "Whilst sitting in our house the other night I noticed a BIG noise on the porch. I called Melissa over and we opened the curtain to discover a fight between our local camp scavengers. The Honey Badger vs. a big male African Civet. Both of them visit the camp at some point each night. This night however their paths crossed and ended in a BIG fight. Usually one would think the honey badger, a fierce creature by reputation, would have the upper hand. In this case however the Civet once grabbed him by his neck and pulled him around a bit. The fight lasted for about 10 minutes after which their paths separated again, only leaving foul smelling scents hanging in the air… IMO the wombat will win 70/30, but it won't be easy. Civet wins 80/20 at maximum weights. |
